Personality
Despite her small size, Madeline is the bravest and most warm-hearted among her classmates. This has been shown through several instances, such as standing before a tiger and simply saying "Pooh, Pooh!", or proudly showing her appendix scar to the others while recuperating at a hospital. In spite of her small stature and apparent innocence, Madeline has a penchant for mischief, often making Miss Clavel nervous of her and the other students' well-being, though this has considerably been toned down in the animated series, being portrayed as more proper and obedient. While initially indifferent if not outright hostile towards Pepito at first, the two did develop an amicable relationship afterwards. Madeline is well-liked by the other girls, due to her ability to take charge and sunny disposition. In Madeline and the Show-off through Madeline and the Giants, Madeline also shows her insecurities over her short height which was seen where Yvette remarks her that she was so short to be modelled or her height being checked to reveal that she grew half inches and became an outcast when she was the only person who is small and tiny while Nona, Danielle, Chloe and Nicole are tall and gigantic and these remarks make her cry in distress as Miss Clavel frequently consoles her.
Upon her family and her relatives, Madeline is very close to her parents as seen in one of the specials which is Madeline's Christmas. She happily meets her country cousin, André during Madeline and the Soccer Star and also shows her angrier side when she defends her cousin after Chloe and the other girls are making fun at him, leading her to start a pillow fight with them until they apologizes to her. Her angrier expression also shown when her cheeks became bright red.

Trivia
- In a 2014 interview, John Bemelmans-Marciano revealed that Madeline was originally going to be American, upon discovering several manuscripts and sketches for the then-unpublished book.
- Although depicted as having black eyes in most media, she is described as having blue eyes in The Golden Basket.
- Madeline's hair is described as being "copper red" in The Golden Basket. While this is true in the specials and early in the tv series, in later seasons her hair darkens towards auburn. This may be explained as natural color changes with aging.
- She is the inheritor of her great-grandfather's fortune. This includes the King Ranch in Texas, an active gold mine, an oil field capable of producing one million barrels per day, and a share in the Neiman Marcus department store in Dallas.
- Originally, Madeline was not portrayed as an orphan as her parents, Ceira and Mr. Fogg made their one and only appearance in Madeline's Christmas. Madeline's portrayal as an orphan in the 1998 film and Lost in Paris may have led to this misconception. It should also be noted that many fans consider the 1998 live-action movie to be a standalone film–thus making it non-canon with the animated series. Also, Madeline was the only known orphan in the school.
- She and Yvette seem to have an on-and-off rivalry. This was seen particularly in the episode "Madeline and the Showoff" during the third season of The New Adventures of Madeline.
- Madeline's last two voice actresses, Andrea Libman and Chantal Strand, voiced two girl characters in the TV series Dragon Tales (as Emmy and Cassie, respectively). Both actresses also voiced characters in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
- In Madeline's Birthday at the Zoo, seven candles are seen on her birthday cake. In Madeline and the Ice Skates, ten candles are seen. Interestingly Birthday at the Zoo is depicted in warm weather while Ice Skates is depicted in the wintertime.
- Madeline has two favorite colors: yellow (as stated in Madeline's Birthday at the Zoo) and blue (as stated in Madeline and the Show-off).
- She plays the piano in Madeline's Rescue (during the song "Have You Seen Our Dog?").
- She can also play the violin in Madeline and the Old Violin and Madeline and the Ice Skates.
- In Madeline and the Soccer Star, she has a cousin named André who tend to Miss Clavel's garden and later joining to his cousin's soccer team.
- In both specials and the first half of Season 1, Madeline's age was 7. She became 8 in Madeline's Birthday at the Zoo and through Madeline and the Marionettes, she became 9 years old during Madeline and the Ice Skates and onwards.

Relationships
Miss Clavel
Miss Clavel was Madeline's teacher and as a mother figure to Madeline and the other girls. She was the only person to give Madeline some comfort if she was sad and upset. A primary example shows that she consoles Madeline when she was crying over her insecurities over her short height as well as suffering nightmares like the other girls. She is also shown to be concern and worry when Madeline acted mischievously throughout the specials and the animated series.
In the film, Madeline: Lost in Paris, she was very happy to see Madeline after she and the girls subdue Madame LaCroque while being aided with Pepito and her friends and she compliments her bravery. The only film that Miss Clavel and Madeline had growing distant briefly was in My Fair Madeline due to her strict behavior and always scolded Madeline for causing more trouble, being mistaken and she didn't believe her story, leading Madeline to be transferred to the London Boarding School, not realizing that Madeline was never causing any more trouble as she was trying to subdue the two thieves who attempted to steal the crown for their own personal gain. She later became concerned and upset when Madeline was imprisoned by the royal police ordered by the king after they mistook her that she was also involved in stealing the royal crown until they released her due to Emma apologizing to the king for taking the credit over subduing the two thieves and Madeline is the real heroine for subduing them both.
Pepito

Madeline was pleased to see Pepito changed his ways during the special
Madeline was initially hostile towards Pepito during his debut on one of the specials because of his bad and naughty behavior until he changed his ways after his dirty pranks went backfired. Through Season 1 onwards, Madeline and the other girls became close friends with Pepito.

Pepito blushes after Madeline kisses him in the cheek when he gives her a yellow parasol as a birthday gift
In Madeline's Birthday at the Zoo, Madeline kisses Pepito in the cheek after he gave her a yellow parasol as a birthday gift. This also shows Pepito had a crush on Madeline and throughout the episodes, she and Pepito are often shown to team up with each other or he backs up for Madeline while she was away with the Sheriff to find and rescue her horse Gallop who was captured by Lasso Louie as seen in Madeline and the Wild West.

Madeline and Pepito had reconciled as best friends during the wedding at the Notre Dame
In Madeline and the Wedding, both had seen exchanging their favorite toys on a tree and helping together building their clubhouse. Pablito abruptly teases Pepito to think Madeline is his girlfriend, thinking that boys should never play with girls, much to his anger and he was mainly responsible for nearly breaking their friendship by making a hate note on Madeline to think Pepito hates her only to be clarified by Pepito himself that he never writes her like that and allegedly it was Pablito who wrote the hate note. Pepito is also asking Madeline to help him fix their clubhouse since Pablito had ruined the entire construction and Madeline gladly accepts and she tells Genevieve to go home and the two happily walking away. They reconciled together as best friends when he takes on a job as a ring bearer during the wedding on the Notre Dame and they enjoyed it together as friends when they threw confetti at each other. In Madeline's Manners, it was Madeline who told both Pepito and Pablito about good manners before they participate in the Spanish Ambassador's dinner night.
In Madeline at Versailles, it was Madeline herself who chases after Pepito since she knew that he was the real culprit for making chocolate markings to the decorated harpischord and for disobeying the rules and his undisciplined actions also caused the head guard of the palace to permanently banned all children from visiting in the Palace of Versailles after accusing Nicole for the chocolate crime that she had never commited. During the chase, Madeline tries to stop Pepito from running away while berating him that all children will never visited this palace again. Once Pepito was cornered by Madeline at the dead end of the palace and seeing his reflection of himself in the clear mirrors, he finally confesses her for not following the rules and its sign due to his disobedience and for his chocolate crime that leads the children to get banned permanently. He apologizes to Madeline and asking her to accompany him to the head guard which she accepts. Since Pepito pay the guard and confesses his chocolate crime and allowing the children to visit the palace, he was punished by cleaning up the palace mirrors.
In Madeline and the Eiffel Tower, both are also seen their mischievous ways when they are on the top of the Eiffel Tower to drop an egg on a pillow but instead hitting a person in a process. Upon learning that they are trapped on the top of the tower and they stayed through the rest of the evening, they both cried over their hunger and being trap forever and soon were fetched by Miss Clavel afterwards and scolds them when they decided to stay longer to watch the fireworks display.
In the films except My Fair Madeline, Pepito is the one along with Madeline's friends to subdue the main villains and in Madeline in Tahiti, Madeline and Pepito are teaming up for the last time to stop the Scarfaced Man from his evil plot of making a volcanic eruption after he rescued her and they reconciled again as best friends.

Sugar later catches up to Madeline who finally apologizes for mistreating her and wanted to make friends with her which Madeline accepts and joins up with her and her friends to play until the director gives Madeline a role as a stunt double for Sugar's action movie.
In Madeline and the Haunted Castle, Madeline's friendship with Sugar was shown to be on-off because she was homesick and misses her mother very much and also shown her negativity when she was not affected on Madeline and the girls including Pepito's scare tactics which she abruptly exposes Chloe as one of the disguised ghosts which angers Madeline while calling her a brat instead of her actual name. They later reconciled after Sugar realized the true meaning of friendship after reuniting with her mother whom she and Miss Clavel had mistook them as witches due to their wind blown appearances.
In Madeline and the Tea Party, it was Madeline who consoles Sugar for her failures because of the tea party set up she had made didn't appreciated by Lord Cucuface which led to a disaster. Sugar decided to make simpler tea party like Madeline and the others do which she succeeded and Lord Cucuface appreciates the tea party before she and her crew set up the filming for her film.
