The Play's The Thing is a song featured in "Madeline on Stage" written by the Sherman Brothers and performed by Madeline and the Girls.

The song is performed in F major during the verses, in C major during the chorus parts, and segues into D major for the last time the chorus is sung until the end of the song.

Plot[]

After the girls pretended they were sick and no longer wanted to perform for their upcoming stage play due to their disappointment of not receiving the roles they were expecting to have Madeline came to encourage and teach them that every character, were big or small, huge or little, is all very important.

Lyrics[]

Madeline: When William Shakespeare wrote a play he got a lot of parts,
There’s Romeo and Juliet who broke each other’s hearts,
There’s Hamlet and Ophelia, the part we call the lead,
But there are many others who help a play succeed!

Girls: The play’s the thing, the play’s the thing.
The mouse is as important as the king,
Without supporting roles
The plot would have its holes,
So cheer for the minor actors in the wing.
Encore!
The play’s the thing!

Madeline: The next time that you watch a play remember that it’s fine
To have a giant monologue or just a little line;
Although it’s great to play the role - the Princess or the Swan,
Without the flowers and the trees...
Girls: The show would not go on!

Sylvie: The play’s the thing, the play’s the thing.
The mouse is as important as the king,

Monique: Without supporting roles
The plot would have its holes,
So cheer for the minor actors in the wing.

Girls: Encore!

Madeline, Monique, and Sylvie: The play’s the thing!

Girls: The play’s the thing!

The play’s the thing, the play’s the thing.
The mouse is as important as the king,
Without supporting roles
The plot would have its holes,
So cheer for the minor actors in the wing.

Encore the play...
Encore the play...
We say...
(We say...)
(We say...)

The play’s the thing!
